Summer is approaching and the flowers are blooming. As cat owners, we worry about what is safe for our feline companions and what is not safe to bring into, and around our homes. As you’re planting your garden this year, there are plenty of plants that you can enjoy without worrying that you’ll be endangering your kitty. Here are a few common cat-safe plants:
Fruits/Veggies
- Strawberry
- Blueberries
- Cantaloupe
- Zucchini
Flowers
- Snapdragon
- Gerber Daisy (also known as African Daisy)
- Petunia
- Rose (Family Rosaceae is safe; note that some plants with “rose” in its name are toxic to cats)
- Zinnia
Herbs
- Mint
- Wheatgrass
- Basil
- Parsley
- Catnip – * While you’re planting, you mind as well plant some fresh catnip for your cat!
Note that while most herbs, are generally non- toxic to cats, they should be consumed in small quantities, if at all. Some herbs contain volatile oils, resins and/or tannins. Consumed in large quantities, herbs can irritate the GI tract.
This is not a comprehensive list of cat-safe plants. The ASPCA has compiled the best list of toxic and non-toxic plants.
Also, never attempt to feed a cat a vegan diet. Cats are carnivores and they must eat meat to survive.
